Photography of 'Toad in the Hole'

Image
Here are the pictures I took of the dish my mom cooked: Since the previous picture was too simple, I added few more elements in the background: a can of milk, butter container and a pepper mill: I also used the "Food" settings in the phone camera which gave me this output:

Naming My Magazine

Image
I wanted the name of my magazine to be unique and special. What I did know was that the title of my magazine wouldn't consist of the word "food" at all as it is the most common, cliché and widely used term for food magazines.  The idea I had behind naming my magazine was that the reader should be able to connect to it in a way that it describes the reader's interest in food. So obviously, the first word to pop into anyone's mind would be "Foodie". But I wanted my magazine name to be a little more sophisticated as the planned contents of my magazine relate to fine dining and gourmet food.  This is when I came up with the word "Epicure".  The meaning of Epicure:

Photography for Cover Page

Image
The front page of a magazine needs to be very attractive in order for the audience to be eager of what comes inside. I wanted the front cover to be aesthetically pleasing and yet look like a proper gourmet food magazine.  My mother cooked some delicious pasta and baked some multigrain bread, and I photographed the food. Here are the pictures I took of the food: The first two pictures were taken in the ratio 9:16 and the rest three in full screen ratio. I decided on finalizing the last picture as its lighting and angle were very good in terms of showing both items, the bread and pasta.

Inspiration for Article Pages

Image
I had planned for the article pages of my magazine to be elegant, minimalistic yet attractive. I wanted a unique design for the article pages. I visualized the page to have any one element that stands out, covering majority of the page so that the article I wrote can be divided into 2 pages. While going through this particular magazine: I came across two pages, where I found simplicity yet attractiveness: I absolutely loved the idea of how they made a semi-circle in the last picture and added two pictures of food items there. This is when it clicked me, why not add a semi-circle picture of a food plate in my magazine?

Design Page Inspiration

Here are a few pictures of the pages I referred to and that inspired me to have a design page in my magazine too:

Why have a design page?

I personally wanted a page between the content page and the article page as direct jumping from the contents to the article seemed to be a little abrupt for me.  This is when I came up with the idea of adding a food picture with a translucent tint to it which follows the magazine's aesthetics. I got this idea from a few cook books and magazines that I had at my place.

Inspiration for The Content Page

Image
Here are the different content pages that I referred to for inspiration from the paper back of Food Magazines I had: Here are few digital magazine Content pages I referred to from the Internet: After looking at all these, I finalized on this picture as my final inspiration for the content page of my magazine as I felt it would suit the design and aesthetic of my magazine most:

Inspiration for Cover Page

Image
The cover page is the most important part of the magazine according to me as this is the page that makes an impression of itself on the viewer. Taking inspiration from a very good attractive cover page was my main moto as that was what was going to influence my magazine cover page. Here are the cover pages I referred to of the paper back of magazines I had:   Here are the Digital magazine cover pages that I referred to from the internet: Finally, I decided not to refer to only one specific cover page of a magazine, but to take inspiration from different magazines for different parts of my magazine such as the title, font, placement of pictures, etc.

Preliminary task

I edited a film poster as a preliminary task appointed by my teacher.  I made use of apps such as Picsart, Canva and Photoroom for the editing of the image and for the editing of the magazine too. Here's the film poster I made:

Storyboard of the Magazine

Editing Software for the Images

Image
For the editing of the pictures I will click, I plan to use certain applications/software that I've used before and am comfortable with. Here are the names of the application/software that I plan on using: 1. Picsart: I plan on using Picsart for one of its features called "Opacity". This particular feature helps reduce the level of opaqueness a picture has and helps give a different dimension to the design. 2. Photoroom: I plan on using the "Remove Background" feature of Photoroom as where it enables the user to remove the background of an object in the picture you've clicked.

Taking Inspiration from Food Magazines

Image
As mentioned in my previous blog, my house is filled with food magazines, so I had the privilege to take inspiration from a proper paperback of a magazine! However, my mom has majorly only BBC GoodFood Magazine which limits my research. This is why I also searched on the web for different brands of food magazines. Below are the pictures of the food magazines my mother owns and a few digital magazines from the web that caught my eye: Here are the link to the online magazine websites that I looked at: https://www.foodandwine.com/ https://www.bonappetit.com/ https://foodandtravel.com/
